Abstract
Abstract: Song collaborations are a mainstay for pianists who work in vocal repertoire. Those experiences are foundational for exploring singer-pianist relationships, but they rarely address the relationships with composers or text authors. There are few reference materials for composer-performer collaborations, and none that document the triangular connections between composers, poets, and performers. In June 2024, (art) Song Lab celebrated its thirteenth year of fostering these collaborations. This column explores the how and why of these creative combinations, with analysis of new approaches to productive communication, augmented musicianship, and healthy respect for the creative integrity among all participants.
