Abstract

A new pontoniid shrimp, Platypontonia hyotis, from the Indo-West Pacific area, is described. The material was collected in the south-western part of Madagascar, where it was found living commensally in bivalve molluscs of the family Ostreidae. A comparison with P. brevirostris, the type species of the genus Platypontonia, is made. The generic diagnosis of Platypontonia as given by Bruce, 1968, who based this on a single species, is reviewed and modified.
