Notes and News Frederick C. Luebke Award We are pleased to announce that the 2016 Frederick C. Luebke Award for outstanding regional scholarship has been awarded to Mark A. Griep (University of Nebraska–Lincoln), Beverly R. Devore-Wedding (University of Nebraska–Lincoln), Janyce Woodard (Little Priest Tribal College), and Hank Miller (Nebraska Indian Community College) for their essay “The Sharing Cycle of Science Learning: Connecting Community Topics to Tribal College Science Lab Courses,” (Volume 36, Number 2, Spring 2016, pp. 131–46). This essay describes a science-learning project designed to create sustainable and culturally and locally relevant laboratory experiences at tribal colleges in Nebraska. The project directly addresses the problem of American Indian students being significantly underrepresented in all science and engineering fields. The Luebke Award, named for the founder of the journal, is given each year for the best article published in Great Plains Quarterly. The Frederick C. Luebke Award includes a cash stipend of $250. Call for Papers The Fifty-Eighth Annual Conference of the Western History Association will be held October 17–20, 2018, in San Antonio, Texas. The theme of the conference is “Reimagining Race and Ethnicity in the West.” Papers and presentations are sought that explore the historical origins, legacy, and construction of race and ethnicity in the North American West, especially those panels that address the complex intersections of race, gender, class, and ethnicity. San Antonio’s rich history is an appropriate location given the theme of the 2018 conference. Throughout the centuries, this region has witnessed a collision of empires, numerous wars, and systems of colonization—a place known for its tragedies, victories, and second chances. As the host site for the 2018 Western History Association conference, San Antonio represents a place of convergence where historians can address the significance and stories of how race and ethnicity transformed the West. In addition to traditional paper sessions, submissions that integrate creative formats and seek to expand conference participation are strongly encouraged. All panel submissions must designate a main contact person, and all proposals, panel or individual, must include a one-paragraph abstract, a one-page curriculum vitae, mailing address, phone, email, and audio-visual equipment needs. Panel submissions require a 250-word abstract outlining the purpose and title of their proposed session. Electronic submissions are required and should be sent as a single PDF document to 2018 Program Committee Co-Chairs, Kent Blansett and Farina King, at wha2018callforpapers@gmail.com. The submission deadlines are September 1, 2017, for individual papers, and December 1, 2017, for organized panels.
