Abstract

A simple, general expression is derived which permits the calculation of ΔF s − ΔF l from the phase diagrams for binary systems with complete solid solubility. In systems with a narrow liquidus-solidus gap good values of Δ( ΔF) may be obtained without any use of detailed information on the free energy of formation of the equilibrium phases. For silver-gold the use of this method gives the expression Δ( ΔF) = −187 X Au X Ag cal/mole.
