Abstract

The predictions of the surface radiation condition are compared with the exact analytical answer for scattering by a soft elliptical cylinder. The agreement is found to be highly satisfactory for a range of parameters which can be handled analytically. Numerical results are presented that substantiate the analysis. The surface radiation condition is generalized to be applicable when the environment is inhomogeneous. Study of the particular case of a circular cylinder surrounded by an inhomogeneous medium reveals that surface boundary condition gives good results for some values of the parameters where analytic manipulation is feasible.
