Abstract

It is shown by a simple analysis that the introduction of a small but systematic error in the evaluation of vorticity causes a significant aberration in the conversion process between disturbance and basic flow kinetic energy in barotropic motion. The neglect of the variation of the coriolis parameter in the geostrophic vorticity is shown to be responsible for large errors in the prediction of the intensity changes taking place in a barotropic model.
