Abstract
Summary It is pointed out that the data on which the Marchenko inversion of the second-order equation for fluid media reconstructs the impedance are not all independent. In particular, the derivative Z'0 of the surface impedance is implied by the displacement velocity response at the surface. We also note that unless Z'0= 0 the zero-frequency reflection amplitude must always equal — 1.
