Abstract The variation with age of the actual number of cluster stars occupying a given area of the G-M diagram is sensitive to the mass function of the cluster. The relative number of stars in different parts of the H-R diagram for a cluster of a given age is not sensitive to the mass function. Evidence is presented which reinforces a previous result that the giants in the Hyades and clusters of similar age are burning core helium.
