To inspire and guide researchers in our field, the journal invited each speaker to write a short challenge paper related to the speaker’s area of expertise. The plenary speakers are Katya Scheinberg and Illya Hicks (whose papers have already appeared), Andrea Lodi (whose paper appears in this issue), and Ojas Parekh, whose paper will appear in the next issue. Each paper is published open access so all can benefit from them.Andrea is the area editor of the IJOC area on design and analysis of algorithms–discrete. This area has long had the largest volume of submissions of our 10 technical areas. Andrea and his set of 17 associate editors have worked tirelessly to ensure that thorough and thoughtful reviews are provided for submissions. Because of this careful review process, all areas of the journal publish work of rigorous technical depth and potential high impact. Of course, this dedication and hard work concerning submitted manuscripts are equaled in the journal’s other nine areas as well. With all areas of IJOC, we are mindful of reviewing time but do not sacrifice quality of reviews for speed. It is a delicate balance as our reviewers (and, indeed, all editors) are uncompensated volunteers. The peer-review system is a traditional cornerstone of scholarly publishing—even with its drawbacks—and has been in place for centuries. We are grateful for the wisdom and ideas of these four challenge paper authors (and their coauthors) and hope that all readers derive value from this challenge collection. Our ultimate aim is for these articles to be the seeds of interesting and impactful investigations that will be published in future issues of the journal. Only time will tell the success of this initiative; I invite you to contact me directly with your response to these papers and the concept of occasional challenge papers appearing in INFORMS Journal on Computing. All my best, Previous Back to Top Next FiguresReferencesRelatedInformation Articles In Advance Article Information Metrics Information Published Online:December 16, 2022 Copyright © 2022, INFORMSCite asAlice Smith (2022) Note from the Editor.
