Abstract

The fatigue behavior of reinforcing steel bars (rebars) is significantly influenced by its surface geometry and the manufacturing process. As a result of loading, stress concentrations occur at the feet of transverse ribs. Here, the fillet radius has a significant influence on the resulting notch stresses. A laser-based line scan system was used to generate three-dimensional digital geometric twins of the rebars. The resulting surface models were implemented in a Finite Element Method (FEM) program for linear-elastic simulations. These results were compared with the fracture locations of the fatigue tests and the local strength.
