Abstract

The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) caused a significant impact over cultural, economic, political and social aspects of life in Spain. One of the most striking phenomena concerning that period comprises the tragedy which befell the children, during and after the conflict. This article provides reflections on the literary work of Ana Maria Matute (1925-2014) with regard to childhood and future prospects of Francoist Spain. The study aims to hold a debate considering the memories of that time: the official memory, supported by the Franco government; the literary memory, presented by the author; and the emblematic memory, which emerges from the literary construction and advances as current reflection on the conflict.
