Abstract

AbstractDespite high hopes and expectations, little is known about the factors that facilitate or prevent the successful adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in learning and development (L&D). AI-based learning experience platforms (LXPs) exemplify how AI is already used in L&D. This chapter addresses factors that affect the successful adoption of an AI-based LXP in a large, multinational corporation. Thus, it contributes to the knowledge concerning the realization of AI’s value in L&D. The chapter provides insights into a qualitative case study on IBM’s adoption process of IBM Your Learning. It describes the solution, going beyond a mere theoretical discussion, and identifies empirically grounded findings. The findings demonstrate new AI-specific challenges that have appeared for L&D at IBM. Because AI-based LXPs are continuously evolving, successful adoption is an ongoing concern. These AI-specific characteristics require new ways of working, investments, and sustainable role changes for L&D. Thus, introducing and maintaining an AI-based LXP is far from plug-and-play.KeywordsArtificial intelligenceLearning experience platformAdoptionCorporate learning
