Abstract

Abstract More than 300 hats were brought together for Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones, a collaborative exhibition between the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) and the milliner Stephen Jones. This article focuses on the challenges faced when preparing a large collection of composite objects, broad in period and style, for exhibition and transport. Examples are provided of a range of mounting and packing solutions that were developed to support the collection for display and during transit by sea to Australia and North America. Included is an examination of materials common to objects found in the collection, the risks inherent to some, both in relation to deterioration and for human health, and the way in which these risks were managed. The identification of feathers and bird parts, within the group, from rare and endangered species and the impact this had with regard to shipment regulations is also discussed.
