Abstract

Any proposal to video record the interactions between care staff and people with dementia raises ethical concerns, and this paper discusses the consent procedure in some detail. Recordings were carried out in two units: in one unit the staff reported that interactions often caused problems of aggressiveness, while in the other staff were confident that it was not a problem for them. The transcripts were analysed using a phenomenological hermeneutic approach inspired by Ricoeur's philosophy. The results are discussed in the light of Kitwood's framework.
