Abstract
Cn U wk 2nite? The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, Lancashire, has unveiled its latest bid to cut the costs of nursing cover: text messaging. Bank nurses are to be notified of shift work opportunities through their mobile phones. Associate director of nursing Nicola Nicholls, pictured above with charge nurse Darren Bigga, said: 'As you can imagine, the bank team work very hard on the phones, trying to find staff to cover shifts. The most frustrating thing is that sometimes we are unable to match up bank staff with vacant shifts, simply because we could not reach them. Using text messages to highlight free shifts could sharply increase the number of spaces we can fill through using bank staff'.
