Abstract

Prior studies in Strategic Factor Market (SFM) have looked at how product market competition may affect the value of resources being traded and the focus so far has been on competition among bidders (i.e., potential buyers). Yet, competitive rivalry may also exist between bidders and sellers as both sides may operate in the same market and need similar resources. Resource exchange between seller and rival buyers may potentially impact their relative competitive positions, which is another factor that could affect the likelihood of resource transaction in the SFM but has been largely overlooked in the literature. In this study, we first test the effect of competition between seller and buyer on the likelihood of SFM transaction, and then examine the conditions under which such a transaction is more or less likely to materialize. Our results help to advance the product factor market rivalry literature in the SFM theory.
