Norwegian (Crusted) Scabies

Abstract

A 64 year old lady presented with generalised itchy rash which was worse at night. She was a known case of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Clinically, there was marked crusting over the interdigital web spaces of the hands (Figure 1), ears (Figure 2), wrists and genitalia. Skin scrapings under light microscopy showed mites and scybala. Twenty to twenty five percent (25%) benzyl benzoate is an effective and inexpensive treatment [1]. A single overnight application is effective in most cases, but a second application 2 to 7 days later is usually advisable. Of primary importance is the necessity for strict contact precautions during the period of hospitalization [2].
