Abstract

Abstract Plans for introducing an Area Museums Service into Northern Ireland, the only part of the United Kingdom still without one, have been put forward several times. Lately, the Museums and Galleries Commission, the Northern Ireland Department of Education, and a recently formed local group, the Northern Ireland Museums Advisory Committee, have taken up the issue again and tried to provide fresh impetus. This paper reviews the present position, and tries to assess the prospects for success this time.
