Abstract
The North Wales National Demonstration Project (1996/98) is focused on multidisciplinary assessment of patients with stroke, from stroke onset to medical stability. Progress in the first 6 months, a literature review, consensus-seeking, and production of evidence-based audit criteria is summarized. The project's relevance to multidisciplinary work and nursing is highlighted and the next steps are itemized. Reference is made to literature on best practice in implementing clinically effective healthcare, and recent surveys on audit methodology. An Internet address is given to access a large US database of clinical guidelines on topics including stroke. There is brief discussion of the implications of the NHS Executive's (1996) recent recommendation to include only guidelines based on randomized controlled trials in contract service specifications, with a discussion of the value of the Delphi consensus-seeking as an education technique in clinical effectiveness.
