Abstract

This book provides comprehensive guidelines for the programmed introduction of Norplant subdermal implants a long-acting reversible hormonal contraceptive. The guidelines present a strategy for the introduction into family planning programs of a new contraceptive technology that will expand the options currently available. Emphasis has been placed on the particular needs of developing countries but the information provided is useful for family planning activities in developed countries. Since Norplant is new to family planning programs information is given about its clinical performance but the implants long term effects past 2 years are presently unknown. Step by step instructions for the insertion of the implants are provided with detailed diagrams. Emphasis is put on use satisfaction so that providers of Norplant are sensitive to the users needs and wishes. This books objectives are to support the health care provider with effective training in the method itself and the counseling techniques required to achieve user satisfaction; support the program manager/health administrator by providing guidance on technical characteristics cultural acceptability and management practices for appropriate delivery; and to inform the health and family planning workers and the public with information on the methods advantages and by discussing special considerations arising from particular circumstances.
