Abstract

The future of midwifery is threatened by the limitations of the phrase ‘normal pregnancy and labour’. Already midwives perform tasks that a short time ago would have been described as abnormal. Midwives must be prepared to extend their role, to take greater responsibility and thus raise the status of the profession. Although traditional skills should provide the foundation of good midwifery care, midwives must not be swept along by change; rather, they must lead the way.
