Abstract
We present an exact quantization of the Klein-Gordon field in a uniformly accelerated elevator. We then appeal to the Principle of Equivalence in order to infer properties of the related general relativistic quantum field theory. Among our results are: the exact expression for the energy eigenvalues, the appearance of a mass term even when the bare mass of the scalar field vanishes, and perhaps, most interesting, a rigorous proof of the conservation of the number of quanta, contrary to what might be expected from the Unruh effect.
