Abstract

Raman and infrared phonons were calculated by applying a short-range force constant model using normal coordinate analysis in rare earth orthovandate, GdVO4. The calculations of the zone center phonons have been made with four stretching and five bending force constants. The calculated Raman wavenumbers are in very good agreement with the experimental ones. As per our knowledge no experimental or theoretical results are available for infrared modes for scheelite phase of GdVO4. The potential energy distribution has also been investigated for determining the significance of contribution from each force constant toward the Raman and the infrared wavenumbers.
