Abstract

In the May 1981 issue of Ethnomusicology, Ida Halpern presented numerous rebuttals to the criticisms I made in my review of her record album and booklet entitled, Nootka: Indian Music of the Pacific Northwest (January 1981: 162-66). I regret that she feels my criticism of her text is unfounded. Before writing this reply I carefully re-examined all of the material once again in order to be sure that I had not treated her work unfairly. I feel that I must stand by my criticisms. Rather than prolong this debate, however, I would prefer to re-emphasize the importance of Halpern's contribution to the field of ethnomusicology. Recorded Northwest Coast Indian music albums are scarce and her addition is certainly valuable. Concerning the accuracy of the information presented in the accompanying booklet, I invite readers to examine the booklet, my review, her response, and then to be the arbiters of the difference of opinion.
