Abstract

The thallium atoms in the lattice channels of the metallic conductor T1V 5S 8 are shown to be mobile at ambient temperature: on anodic oxidation nonstoichiometric phases Tl xV 5S 8 are obtained with 1 ⩾ x ⩾ 1 3 . 205T1 and 51V NMR data reveal a unique behaviour: the topotactic redox reaction proceeds via stoichiometry dependent changes in the oxidation state of the channel guest cations at constant matrix charge. Partial metallic bonding is observed between the thallium atoms clustered within the lattice channels at high x values.
