Abstract

The paper concerns the propagation of Gaussian wave packets in media described by complex-valued dispersion relations. It is shown that only a discrete number of frequencies that make the imaginary part of the dispersion equation equal to zero can propagate in such a medium and that the shape of the Gaussian wave packet is prescribed by properties of the medium, this wave packet having different scales in the longitudinal and transverse directions to the ray.
