Abstract

The spectral representation approach to investigation of bounded ultrasonic beams nonspecularly reflected from or transmitted through a layered medium has been extensively developed and the key characteristics of these effects have been well understood [e.g., H. L. Bertoni and T. Tamir, Appl. Phys. 2, 157 (1973); T. D. K. Ngoc and W. G. Mayer, IEEE Trans. Sonics Ultrason. SU-27, 229 (1980)]. However, these past studies were still limited to incident beams that had to be modeled by such analytical forms as Gaussian or polynomial functions. This paper is intended to apply the spectral representation approach to the most general case where incident beams having an arbitrary profile can be investigated. The presentation will review the principal results obtained in the past and conclude with new results calculated for the general case. [This work was supported by ONR.]
