Abstract

The reaction ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}+d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p+p$ was studied at a center-of-mass pion energy of 118\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2 Mev, using scintillation counters and a liquid deuterium target. The angular distribution was given by $\frac{d\ensuremath{\sigma}}{d\ensuremath{\Omega}}\ensuremath{\propto}A+{cos}^{2}\ensuremath{\theta}$, with $A=0.216\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.033$, while the total cross section was 12.09\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.93 mb. The total cross section for the inverse pion production reaction was calculated from detailed balancing as 3.10\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.24 mb. These results are compared with other work.
