Abstract

Obesity has become epidemic, increasing the prevalence of insulin resistance. This is a growing public health problem because insulin resistance is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The rising rate of obesity in children and young adults is cause for great concern. Lifestyle changes such as weight reduction, regular physical activity, and smoking cessation can improve insulin sensitivity. The use of low-fat diets and high monounsaturated diets has also been advocated. Several programs, including the Finnish Diabetes Prevention Program, have shown that lifestyle change is a feasible and effective strategy for reducing insulin resistance and preventing or forestalling the development of type 2 diabetes.
