Abstract
Measurements of the energy spectrum for 98 keV protons backscattered from Al(110) under shadowing-blocking conditions have been performed with high resolution. The corresponding energy losses at central collisions are dominated by ionization of the Al inner shells. In connection with coupled-channel calculations for the electronic energy loss in individual atomic collisions, we discuss the influence of higher-order effects and surface relaxation in the simulation of the strongly asymmetric surface peak.
