Abstract

Excessive postoperative biliary drainage or bile ascites should alert the physician to the possibility of serious damage to the external hepatic bile ducts. Therapy should be directed toward correction of metabolic deficiencies, control of sepsis, and the establishment of internal biliary drainage by whatever means possible. Severe associated injury to the pancreas may require pancreaticoduodenectomy.
