Abstract

Enhanced light scattering (ELS) from a nonuniform transparent gas provides acomplex signal that can be recorded by a quadrature demodulation technique andanalysed to give instant and continuous monitoring of gas velocity. The methodby which the velocity of the gas flow is extracted from the ELS signal isdeveloped. It uses the Hilbert transform properties of analytical functions. Thismethod for obtaining the velocity as a function of time is checked bycomparing its histogram to ELS Doppler spectra. Using this continuousmonitoring, extremely fast velocity rates of change, up to 109m s−2,were observed.
