Abstract

This chapter deals with agents (a) that are able to induce the generation of action potentials in autonomic ganglion cells and/or to facilitate the generation of action potentials in response to orthodromic or direct electrical stimulation or to chemical stimulation and (b) whose sites of action in the membrane of ganglion cells are not on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR)1. The ganglionic effects of non-nicotinic ganglion-stimulating agents are mediated by (a) specific receptors different from the nAChR, (b) non-specific alterations of the properties of the ganglion cell membrane, or (c) changes in the ionic distribution between the interior and the exterior of ganglion cells.
