Abstract

Relevant properties of the exact exchange operator differ from commonly used approximations to it by a large factor. A theory of electron correlation that can be applied to band-structure calculations has been developed. The sum of exchange and correlation operators does have a magnitude comparable to local approximations, but exhibits significant nonlocal behavior. Accurate band structure cannot be predicted without inclusion of these nonlocal many-electron contributions.
