Abstract

Particles are formed by bubble dissolution in filtered seawater, as demonstrated by photographs and by particulate organic analysis. The dissolution of large numbers of small bubbles in the ocean suggests that particles produced from these dissolving bubbles may constitute a significant fraction of the nonliving organic particulate matter present.
