Abstract
Investigation of the linguistic code in which messages are couched is a legitimate scientific enterprise, even though the study of communication involves a great deal more than just the code itself. Unfortunately, many aspects of the general communication subject matter have been incorporated into the grammatical description of linguistic codes, far more than most researchers realize, and the resulting descriptions have suffered in both accuracy and elegance as a result.
