Abstract

The attenuation and phase velocity of sound in a duct with non-linearly responding walls were measured at different frequencies and sound pressure levels. The duct lining was a locally reacting surface consisting of a perforated metal sheet with a partitioned air backing; the linear and nonlinear components of its impedance were extracted by direct measurements in an impedance tube. The phase velocity and the attenuation of sound in the duct were obtained theoretically by incorporating the Morse charts in a computer program, and were in good agreement with the experimental findings.
