Abstract

Single beam Z-scan measurement has shown that the methyl-red-doped PVA thin film possesses a large nonlinear refractive index: n2 ( cm 2/ W ) = -2.29 × 10-4 cm 2/ W and n2 ( cm 2/ W ) = -8.75 × 10-5 cm 2/ W for the CW 532 nm linear polarization light and circular polarization light, respectively. The mechanism for the process of nonlinear refraction is discussed in terms of the photoisomerization of MR molecules. Moreover, photoinduced birefringence with values on the order of 10-4 has been observed when investigating the photoinduced birefringence of the thin film with a CW 532 nm laser as the pump light and a CW 650 nm laser as the probe light.
