Abstract

Fast magnetosonic waves modulated by low frequencies and propagating in the cylindrical layer of magnetic flux tubes are studied. A Schroedinger equation for the axially symmetric case is derived using cylindrical coordinates. Under certain conditions, this equation has a soliton solution and a study of the stability of the solution yields an estimate of the growth rate for the modulation instability. The applicability of these results to chromospheric spicules and the chromospheric network is examined.
