Abstract

A newly developed nonlinear model for the analysis of composite tubular connections with weld-beads, typically used in fixed offshore platforms, is presented. The constitutive relationship used is based on a semi-empirical approach making use of load-slip curves obtained from experiments conducted by the authors, and incorporating simple physical models for the observed failure modes. Comparative studies are undertaken using experimental data and design code predictions from the UK Department of Energy and the American Pertroleum Institute guidance notes. The formulation developed is shown to give results in good agreement with the experimental results. It also gives more consistent results than the available design recommendations.
