Abstract

The time development of the ion acoustic modes of a hot electron plasma drifting through a cold ion beam is investigated. The nonlinear dynamics of the wave are governed by nonlinear Landau damping, resonant wave-wave scattering being forbidden. Owing to the adiabatic nature of the electrons, nonlinear Landau damping on the electrons is the dominant nonlinear process rather than ion nonlinear damping, contrary to the results of Kadomtsev. This error brings the anomalous resistivity formula of Sagdeev into serious question.
