Abstract

The exact solution for first-order nonlinear scattering of two plane sound waves in a nondispersive medium [P. J. Westervelt, J. Acoust. Soc. Amer. 53, 384(A) (1973)] is here extended so as to be valid for a dispersive medium. This solution is applied to a discussion of the absorption of sound by sound and the absorption of sound in superfluid helium. The influence dispersion has on degrading the performance of the Acoustic Parametric Array is demonstrated. The Electromagnetic Parametric Array will be briefly discussed in order to point out the effects of dispersion in its performance. [This work was supported by the U. S. Office of Naval Research].
