Abstract

Results from the Nonlinear Progressive Wave Equation (NPE) model suggest that remote acoustic localization of an explosive signal may contain an apparent source displacement which depends upon the strength of the explosion. The physics of the apparent displacement are investigated in the context of the following question: Can remote acoustic detection distinguish between an underwater explosion and a signal which entered the water column as a linear wave?
