Abstract

A nonlinear analytical model of the machine chatter in orthogonal cutting is presented. The influence of the ploughing force and of friction are taken into consideration. A linear stability analysis is carried out. An approximate solution of the nonlinear problem is obtained. It is shown that for some supercritical conditions, corresponding to linear instability, the amplitude of vibrations saturates and decreases in the nonlinear analysis. The influence of cutting conditions on stability results is investigated.
