Abstract
Introduction Nonlesional extratemporal seizures present difficult treatment decisions in resective epilepsy surgery. Reported seizure outcomes vary and neurologic consequences of resection are manifold. Cognitive outcomes data on this population has been limited especially in children. This study attempts to expand our understanding of cognitive and seizure outcomes in children undergoing nonlesional extratemporal resections. Methods Twenty-five children with nonlesional extratemporal lobe seizure onset and comprehensive pre- and postoperative neuropsychological assessment underwent surgery at St. Louis Children's Hospital from 1994 to 2006 (13 frontal, 2 parietal, 2 occipital, 8 multiple). Repeated measures ANOVA were completed for each variable and two-factor analyses of variance for IQ and hemispheric onset. Seizure outcomes and morbidity were analyzed retrospectively.
