Abstract

The dc-dc converters with bidirectional capabilities are widely adopted in numerous applications like grid-integrated PV-battery systems, hybrid electric vehicle chargers with V2G (vehicle-to-grid) and G2V (grid-to-vehicle) architecture, and uninterruptable power supplies (UPS). The quadratic bidirectional dc-dc (QBDC) converters have recently received good attention among various types of converters. Therefore, this chapter presents a comprehensive review of the existing QBDC converters. These converters are categorized into three groups, namely, quadratic boost/buck (QB-BDC), quadratic buck-boost (QBB-BDC), and high quadratic gain bidirectional dc-dc converters (HQG-BDC). In addition, this chapter explains the operating principle and develops voltage conversion ratio (VCR) and the design of passive elements of one converter in each group. Furthermore, a comprehensive comparison is made regarding structural differences, the number of components, voltage conversion ratio in both operating modes, efficiency, and other features like continuous current at both low and high voltage ports and common ground features. Finally, this chapter discusses essential aspects of QBDC converters; and it gives a readymade solution for practice engineers to select the optimal converter for the given application.
