Abstract

With amplifying energy consumption around the world, profound and substantial efforts are being taken for better and efficient energy management systems. Nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) allows the user to measure energy consumption and monitor the individual loads of a system (residential/commercial/industrial) without multiple sensors. This cuts the cost involved in the installation of sensors and data acquisition devices for individual loads, thereby increasing the efficiency of energy management practices. This approach, also known as nonintrusive appliance load monitoring, is currently being widely used for residential and commercial energy monitoring and in smart buildings. It helps in monitoring the entire building’s energy consumptions through a single device. The user can obtain home insights, energy reports, and measures to be taken to increase energy savings. This chapter discusses the methodology, hardware requirements, data acquisition and processing, challenges, and areas of the future scope of NILM.
