Abstract

The effects of different non-gravitational forces on the motion of artificial satellites are described. Drag, direct solar radiation pressure and Earth albedo radiation pressure are discussed in detail. The effect of the Earth’s shadow may be described analytically by different types of “shadow function”. However, this approach can cause errors in practical computation of perturbations. The rotation of the body must be taken into account in some cases. The albedo radiation pressure can be described analytically provided the constant albedo model is used, but the practical computation requires numerical methods, owing to the character of the albedo distribution over the Earth surface.
