Abstract
AbstractThe purpose of the study was to determine how training and support provided by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) impact the capabilities of artisans and their craft groups’ internal constraints and business sustainability in the context of external constraints that may influence the long-term viability of artisan businesses. Awareness of social and environmental responsibility was explored as one potential internal constraint, among others. Utilizing a multiple case study design with embedded units of analysis, five case studies were conducted with artisan groups and their NGO partners during a 10-day field study in Guatemala. Additional interviews were conducted for context within the Guatemalan artisan section with 3 NGOs, a trainer, and an apparel executive. Two main conclusions can be made from this study. First, the product development trainings have an impact on artisan capabilities, but have a positive impact on business success only when two things are present: demand for the product and a strong NGO partner. A second conclusion from the study is the strategic choice of imported raw materials for product differentiation contributes to artisan group sustainability. This differs from previous research. Lastly, it was determined that artisan had little awareness of environmental and social responsibilities.
