Abstract

IN a recent communication, Dewhurst and Calcutt1 discussed the hydroxylation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by the Udenfriend2 system. This system, consisting of a buffer, substrate, ascorbic acid and a metal complex in the presence of oxygen, is capable of hydroxylating aromatic compounds2,3. However, the system is also capable of oxidizing aliphatic4,5 and heterocyclic6–8 compounds, and hence the hydroxylation of aromatic compounds may be regarded as a special aspect of a more general oxidation reaction.
